if you follow me on instagram, you know that i just got back from a cruise in the caribbean with my family (thanks to my in-laws jim and dawn!). we sailed aboard royal caribbean’s empress of the seas. the empress of the seas is the smallest ship in royal caribbean’s fleet, but as our cruise director carlos would say, it has the biggest heart! with fewer guests on board, the ship felt a lot more intimate than other cruises, and never felt too crowded. it was also super easy to navigate due to its smaller size, and we felt like we had mastered it on the first day. the rooms were recently renovated and very nice. our stateroom attendants were extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay.

we ate breakfast and lunch in the windjammer most days. there was a nice variety and everyone in our group found something that they liked. for dinner we did the ‘my time’ dining option in the main dining room. we made reservations at different times each night and were always seated right away. the food and service were both excellent every night. the menus were different themes each night (italian, american, latin, and french). i especially enjoyed the beef tenderloin, mahi mahi, and escargot. on our one day at sea, royal caribbean offered a brunch with complimentary bottomless mimosas and bloody marys. we thought this was extremely fun and a great addition to our cruise.

although the empress was a bit older and smaller than other ships in the fleet, there was plenty for us to do. we enjoyed laying poolside with fun tropical drinks, trying our hand at electronic poker in the casino, and doing some shopping. i bought two pairs of beautiful earrings and a necklace from the royal shops on board. the shops had a nice variety and a lot of cute items! in the evenings we enjoyed the broadway-style shows, the comedian, and the game shows. i am convinced that cruising is the way to vacation with a family (we had six in our group) because there are a lot of different options for people to do throughout the cruise and everything is included.

i am so grateful for the VIP experience i had on the empress of the seas. we had a fantastic experience aboard a beautiful ship. we are already planning our next trip aboard royal caribbean. we are thinking maybe a european cruise this fall? what do you guys think?

prepping for st. paddy’s day

st. patrick’s day is just a week away! in the twin cities people really get into st. patrick’s day. we have parades in both minneapolis and saint paul, countless parties and events, and a whole lot of green. if you’re anything like me, you may not wear a lot of green or color in general. i’m more of a neutrals kind of girl (grey, black, tan, etc.) I was looking for something a little more muted than your traditional st. paddy’s kelly green. i found this camo tee at target and it’s going to be the perfect green item for st. patrick’s day (and only $12.99!) i sized up for a little more of a relaxed fit. you won’t be finding anyone pinching me come the 17th! i linked this tee again below as well as some other green items for those of you that like to get a bit more festive!

spring tops + gap sale!

hi and happy wednesday! we are really excited over at our house because we are leaving on vacation tomorrow! i bought this printed top over the weekend at gap to take on our trip. i loved all of the fun spring tops they had and i’m kicking myself because right now online gap is having a huge sale! tons of items are 50% off and you get an extra 20% off with the code MOREFUN. I linked more of my favorite tops for spring from gap below. time for some spring shopping! also, i posted these wedges on instagram the other day. they are amazing dupes for the $700 chloe ones and look almost identical to the $160 marc fisher ones. it is still a bit cold to wear them in minneapolis (at least for very long!) but i can’t wait to really get a lot of use out of them on our trip! can’t wait to share more!

shopbop sale!

hello and happy wednesday! one of my favorite online stores shopbop is having a huge sale now through saturday. shopbop is based in madison, wisconsin where i went to college (go badgers!) and i have loved shopping on their site since i discovered it in madison close to ten years ago (not to age myself or anything…) the sale is a ‘buy more save more’ sale and you can get up to 25% off with the code GOBIG17 until saturday! shopbop can be a bit pricey but with this sale you can get some very affordable pieces. so…  i put together my favorite spring items from the sale that are all under $50 (!!) time to do some spring shopping! also, i wouldn’t wait too long to buy because everything tends to go fast!

suede and denim weekend wear.

jacket // jeans // shoes // purse // sunglasses

happy monday! these photos are from a saturday spent in our neighborhood. this is pretty much a standard uniform for me on the weekend whether i am running errands or hanging out with friends. on the weekend you can pretty much always find me in jeans and a comfortable tee. these are my absolute favorite jeans ever. if you haven’t tried on madewell jeans, you are missing out. if you don’t have super thin legs (i certainly do not, jealous of all you ladies that do!) these fit really really well. anyway, go get some because i swear by them! i layered this faux suede jacket over to keep me warm but also dress my tee up a bit. (jacket is on major sale and comes in multiple colors!) here in minneapolis it’s been feeling a lot more like spring than winter, and i love not having to wear a huge coat everywhere. something lighter like this suede jacket has been perfect. once it warms up even more, i love the idea of pairing this jacket with a dress too!

tell me! what is your go-to weekend wear?

athleisure shoes.

i just bought these shoes on major sale (less than $50!). i’ve been wanting to buy a pair of “athleisure” tennis shoes for awhile now. something i could wear with jeans, on casual friday, traveling, etc. but not that i would wear to workout. i wanted something that was a bit more stylish! also, i usually wear black or darker colored tennis shoes, but i was feeling like lightening it up for spring! i linked other pairs that i was looking at as well as the pair i got below.

insta roundup.

happy hump day! hope this post finds you well on this beautiful wednesday! it has been in the 60s in minneapolis so nothing to complain about here! i decided to do a ’round up’ of the oufits i have posted on instagram lately with some links. going to try and do this more often!! xo

travel guide: cabo san lucas.

we just got back from a wonderful four days in cabo san lucas with my mom! i thought i would start sharing trips in a ‘travel guide’ format. let me know if you like it!

where we stayed.

we stayed at the solmar resort on the pacific ocean side of cabo. the resort is the perfect location in cabo as it has pacific ocean views but also is an easy walk to the marina and downtown. when we checked-in to the hotel, we were upgraded to a penthouse suite. the views were amazing and we loved our huge patio facing out to the ocean. the resort is all-inclusive, and we ate most of our meals here. my favorite meals were the breakfasts and lunch! i loved the chilaquiles at breakfast and also the green juice. during the day we spent a lot of time by the pool drinking cocktails and eating sushi or food from the pool bar. this resort (and also this area of cabo) is extremely relaxing. i would recommend this for couples and anyone looking to get away to relax. my one issue with our location is that you are not allowed to swim in the pacific ocean because it’s too rough. we had to go over to the other side of cabo (the sea of cortez) to swim. i think in the future we would try staying over there to swim and also there is a lot more action over there, bars, etc.. will get to that later. loved this resort though!

what we did.

as i mentioned, we spent a lot of time at the resort around the pool. which was amazing! but every day we also walked from the resort to some sort of adventure.

we went for walks on the beach a few times. one thing i would warn you of is that the sand in cabo is not very fine. these beaches are not like the caribbean or even cancun. it actually hurts the bottom of your feet. we referred to walking on the beach as ‘walking on broken glass.’ i would wear tennis shoes or water shoes when walking. also, you cannot get near the water. we knew you could not swim in the ocean, but thought we could dip our feet in. security came and reprimanded us.

we also shopped and drank our way through the marina and downtown area. the marina is a 5 minute walk from the resort, so it was really easy to get to. we loved bartering in the flea markets throughout town. i bought another mexican blanket, a straw bag, and a cabo headband.

kimono // shorts are thrifted // swimsuit (old similar here)

one of my favorite parts of the trip was taking one of the ‘glass bottomed boat’ tours to see the cabo sights. cabo is famous for el arco or the arch. el arco is a rock formation at the very southern tip of cabo. near the arch is lover’s beach, a small beach on the sea of cortez side, and also divorce beach, which is on the pacific side. these beaches are only accessible by boat, but still are super crowded. lover’s beach is calm, you can swim or snorkel, but divorce beach is too rough to swim in. i think these beaches are cool to see, but i wouldn’t advise hanging out there as it was so crowded. we also got to see so many sea lions near here. they just killed me they were so cute.

our driver made a detour to take us whale watching. he said as long as he got “muchas tips” that we could take us over there. it was so cool! seeing the whales was tony’s very favorite part of the trip.

on our last day we went to medano beach on the sea of cortez so that we could swim! we brought towels and found a spot to lay. this beach is public, so you can pretty much lay wherever. we loved medano beach! there are tons of people, boats, drinks, and fun! the best part about medano beach is the office. this is a bar and restaurant right on the beach. your feet are in the sand as you are eating. we loved it and it had a great atmosphere. we would love to try a hotel over on medano beach next time. the only part we hated were the vendors. vendors were approaching us trying to sell us stuff every second we were there. the only time they did not bother us is if we were laying face down on our towel.

what to eat and drink.

los tres gallos: had dinner here in a courtyard under a beautifully lit tree. the food is very authentic and very delicious. highly recommend!

the office: great oceanfront bar on medano beach. great atmosphere and even better margaritas! i had fish tacos that were out of this world.

el squid roe: best place to party in cabo!

thanks mom for such an amazing trip!!

annual az trip!

every year around new year’s we go to arizona to visit my dad and stepmom. we were looking forward to doing a lot of hiking, relaxing, and tony wanted to do some golfing. you will never guess what happened… almost everyone in my family got sick! like stomach virus super sick. tony didn’t leave the house for DAYS. these photos are pretty much all from our first day before the sickness swept through the house. hopefully we have better luck next year!!  i spy sister! she and i took a gorgeous sunset hike (when everyone else was sick!) there were tons of hot air balloons in the air. it was very beautiful! top right of this photos has hot air balloons if you look closely! this is our patio in the room we stayed in. gorgeous!  stayed in sweatpants almost every day…  on the last day i sat out by the pool. it isn’t really warm enough in december to sit by the pool but i got out there for a few hours. fully clothed, but better than minneapolis temps! also, this house is for sale! buy me!
